About Us

Shankara is a small not for profit school in New Delhi, India. It was established by Sringeri Sharada Peetham Charitable Trust in 1991.

Our aim is to identify, assess, train, rehabilitate and educate children with special needs. We address children suffering from intellectual disability, such as, Down’s syndrome, and other special needs, including autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, and hyperactivity disorder.

Our goal is to grow both in scope, scale and with an option of branching to residential facilities also.

Where are we?

We care and we never say no to helping others …

What We Do

Our Mission

We care and we never say no to helping others. As no need is too great for us, we accept children with any type of intellectual disability irrespective of its severity. We aim to help the children become as self-sufficient as possible and educate them within the limits of their ability. We try to ensure every child’s right to be self-sufficient and live respectfully.

Our Vision

Our belief is that every child with special needs has a fundamental right to live with respect and learn to become self-reliant in society. No child should be deprived of basic rights simply because of lack of resources and tools to realize ones dreams.

We aspire to ensure quantifiable improvement in the environment and the learning levels of the children with special needs so that they may be visible and heartily accepted by our society.

Presently, we cater to 40 children with special needs, some of who have been denied admission in other schools due to the severity of their medical condition, in a day care environment with an intervention center. We believe every child with intellectual disability is unique and has a unique way of learning. We therefore invest in experienced personnel and offer Individualized Training Programs, including:

  • Academics
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech language therapy
  • Music and dance therapy
  • Vocational training
  • Yoga
  • Pottery
  • Glass painting
  • Candle making
  • Block Printing

We believe in working with the parents of the children with intellectual disability therefore our programs are aimed at supplementing rather than replacing their efforts.

We care and we never say no to helping others …

Our Achievements

We believe that everything we do is measurable and transparent and we have achieved some progress. Through monitoring and evaluation we aspire to utilize the donor’s gift to their maximum extent.

Coverage

Impact of Intervention – Therapeutic Activities

Each child is unique and has a unique way of learning. Thus individual training programs are implemented, which are holistic and aim at the complete development of the child. We have made some measurable progress in the end. By providing therapeutic activities, we ensure every child can try to be mobile despite their limitations.

How Can You Help

Currently, we have a basic infrastructure, which includes a building and a van to transport the students, both donated by our sponsors, Sringeri Sharada Peetham Charitable Trust. We require funding for horizontal and vertical expansion. For horizontal expansion, we require more specialized and recreational equipment for students and additional special educators. For vertical expansion we need: specialized vans, a computer lab, specialized equipped playground and an option for branching out into residential facilities enabling our children to get quality education and treatment.

HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD

A meeting was held quite far from Earth:
"It's time again for another birth."
Said the Angels to the Lord Above,
"This special child will need much love."

Her progress may seem very slow,
Accomplishments she may not show
And she'll require extra care
From folks she meets way down there.

She may not run or laugh or play
Her thoughts may seem quite far away:
In many ways she isn't adapt
And she'll be known as handicapped.

So let's be careful where she's sent
We want her life to be content.
Please, Lord, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.

They will not realize right away
The leading role they're asked to play
But with this child sent from above
Comes a stronger faith and richer love.

And soon they'll know the privilege given
In caring for the Gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge,
so meek and mild
Is Heaven's Very Special Child.
